When I think back to the founding of JSF 27 years ago, it’s impossible to not also think about the birth of my 1st daughter Alexa – who is now almost 26 years old. She and the firm grew up and experienced triumphs and obstacles alongside each other. Fast-forwarding to today, Alexa is preparing for her wedding this upcoming weekend!
As my wife Shari and I approach this milestone as parents, I can’t help but reflect on how we have reached this juncture. When I close my eyes, I still vividly see Pony rides in Griffith Park, running around Santa Monica Pier, countless camp adventures, journeying through school, and now this new chapter about to begin for her – and for us. It’s a poignant moment to take a step back and reflect on the path that brought us here and where we look to head next.
As many of you can attest, one of the biggest financial life shifts transpires around the birth of a child. Following the founding of the firm about a year prior, we were thrown headfirst into a whole new world yet again. My planning instincts kicked in and it was a time of immense growth and change for us personally and professionally, which only became more expansive as we later welcomed Jonathan and Olivia to our family.
An important part of the planning process we’ve adopted and finessed over JSF’s tenure is to be pleasantly surprised if life goes as planned – but more so to be as financially and mentally prepared as possible for life’s inevitable curveballs. As a firm, embracing the curveball translated to events like the financial crisis of 2008, where we not only endured through but emerged on the other side poised to continue building our firm. In these crises, life seemed insurmountable but looking back, it was the ability to be financially and emotionally prepared for the uncertainties in life that allowed us to persevere and eventually thrive.
This brings me back to the impending wedding weekend. At JSF, we relish the opportunity as your financial confidants to celebrate, cry, guide and walk alongside you during the many financial and life milestones that you experience. I’m grateful now to share my own milestone with you. Whether you’ve recently joined our firm or can remember when Alexa was a baby crawling around the office, I’d like to take this moment to personally thank each of you for your continued trust and support of JSF as we continue this journey together.

As part of our recognition of International Women’s Day, we reached out to a number of female clients seeking their stories, experiences, and words of advice about finance and financial planning. The response was overwhelming and filled with wisdom that we felt deserved saving and sharing with others. The result is this booklet, which captures some of those generously shared thoughts.Read more
